Having been promoted at the end of the last season the Dart team management realised that early season fixtures will be crucial to get off to a good start in the new league of south division two, having won a 7s tournament in Caradon the previous week ( scoring 11 goals , conceding none ), the 1st team travelled to a team from a higher division to test their mettle.

Sidmouth started well and moved the ball quickly between obviously good players, creating a number of minor chances and giving the very young Dart back line something to think about. As Dart started to find their feet the game changed , effort increased and the speed with which they moved the ball increased, the backs pushed further up the pitch cutting off the supply to the Sidmouth forwards. Rewards came soon after when having won a short corner it was converted by Ben Gaywood with a well placed low flick. Belief flooded into the Dart players in an almost visible manner.

A few minutes later a good move down the right was well finished by Gaywood again , and at regular intervals they scored two more well worked short corners , one scored by Connie Clark and one by Max Verway. Dart went to half time 4-0 up and very happy.

A team talk by new captain Jason Wakefield stressed the importance of being careful in the tackle , and then two minutes after half time he committed a horrendous tackle out side the D , deemed to be so bad it was converted to a short corner and well scored by the Simouth forward. Dart wobbled for a couple of minutes and then scored down the other end through Jon Woodhouse .

By this stage the frustration for Sidmouth was beginning to mount, believing they should be beating at team from a lower division they started to argue about all of the neutral umpires decisions. This lead to two players being sent off , unusual in a friendly , and there was no way back for them. Dart added two more goals through Bill Verway and Woodhouse to finish the score at seven. Sidmouth added to their tally by getting a third yellow card just after the two previous had returned to the fray.

A good two weeks for Dart, they look to have good fitness and determination , if they can keep discipline as well as they have it could be a good season,
Here is the promotion picture of the Dart Men's first team after beating ECV Hornets 5 v 1 (15/03/08).

Here's the match report

Dart men's 1st 5 Ecv Hornets 1

Dart returned home for their last league game of the season knowing that only a win would do to try and catch the league leaders , but also to keep their home stats to being unbeaten at home the whole season. They surrendered the top spot the previous week when they lost to a very good Bridport side.

Incessant rain helped neither side and the game took shape around two hard working midfields. Dan Smith and Jason Wakefield started to flourish and bring the forwards, Richard Milton and Jon Woodhouse into play. The first goal came from a move down the right, the ball was slapped into the D and Smith, arriving late , struck well past the keeper. Within five minutes Wakefield added a second with a strong run and shot. ECV pulled one back just before half time so that the teams went into the break at 2 - 1.

Dart continued to get better in the second half, pushing higher up the park gave them more control. Short corners came and went and when Matt Quartley asked to be main striker he was rewarded with a goal. The first shot was parried but came straight back to him, he controlled the ball and struck under the keeper. Alec Gibson then joined in with a strong run down the right, laying the ball off and continuing to run he linked in the middle and slipped the ball under the keeper to make it 4--1.

Left 'em for dead.

Jon woodhouse finished the rout with a clip over the keeper for the fifth, this showed how good Dart had been all season, putting five past the third placed team. Dart have been promoted but were very disappointed not to finish on top. They look now for silverware in the Devon plate, hoping to have something to show for a very good season.

Devon plate
Dart 6 Tavistock A 1

Dart started quickly but Tavistock moved the ball well in short passing moves to keep the game tight at the start. The first goal came from a well struck short corner that looked to be going wrong, well finished by Richard Milton. Tavistock equalised from a short corner at the other end and the game stayed this way until the half time break.

Both teams had played league games the day before and in the second half looked tired, but the half time team talk worked for Dart when they slowed the ball down and played more as a team. Craig Walton added a second from a short corner and this opened the floodgates. Milton getting a second, Walton adding to his with another short corner, Woodhouse getting his usual goal a game and Smith adding to his ever increasing tally towards the end of the season.

This result does not salve the hurt of coming second in the league but gives Dart another opportunity to take on their big rivals East Devon in the final.
Athertone Adders

The Adders Men's side lost their unbeaten record and conceded four goals for the first time since September 2006. This defeat still leaves them five points clear at the top of the league, but with a key game against second placed Market Drayton coming up in two weeks time, the Adders need to improve their game and attitude in order to avoid defeat number two in that game.

Streetly started the game with conviction and commitment and it was no surprise when the home side took the lead after 10 minutes. This woke up the Adders and they equalised almost immediately through Nick Wright, but then let Streetly take the lead straight back. This goal produced the right response and Martin Webb first equalised and then put Atherstone ahead from a short corner. Streetly then brought the game level at 3 -3 through a penalty stroke after Robert Boal was harshly judged to be using the back of his stick in the D.
This set up the final fifteen minutes and it was Streetly who took their only chance with 5 minutes left on the clock and they took the points.

Adders Ladies faired much better and beat Aston University 3 - 1. the goals from A O'Callaghan, S.Kerr, and C Tiernan. It was Aston that took the lead with a goal in the first few minutes of play. The Aston Ladies were young, fit and able, but the welcome return of Sara Roberts-Wright and her aggressive sideline support seemed to rouse the Adders from their slumbers. The first half was flattering to Aston but the Adders managed to maintain a high level of confidence and composure, and were rewarded by an equaliser in the final seconds of the first half. Adders took control of the second half and finally took the lead through Caroline Tiernan. The Umpire's then handed out cards left, right and centre with two cards awarded to Aston University and one to the Adders. All the players were feeling the pressure, and it was Ali O ‘ Callaghan who stepped up cool and collected to complete the well deserved victory with the final goal of the day.

Dart

In South East Division 1 Dart continued on their merry way with a 6 - 1 victory over Taunton Civil Service. The final score makes it look easy but Dart struggled at times and were lucky to run out such easy winners. 3 - 0 up in 10 minutes and cruising they proceeded to forget what had got them there and let TCS back in with a goal. They got a second shortly after half time but fortunately for Dart the next one was theirs and this paved the way to two more before the end. They say good sides can win when they play badly and this win keeps them on target for the division title.

Sevenoaks

Men’s 4th XI

Sevenoaks 2 - 2 University of Kent

The University side arrived at Hollybush Lane in plenty of time, making sure they were prepared for a flying start. Sevenoaks however came into the game with little preparation particularly lacking penalty corner practice.
Despite this though the spectators saw Sevenoaks get off to a good start, dominating play and creating several chances with the University goalkeeper making several key saves to keep his side at 0-0. Against the run of play the University had a break and Sevenoaks unluckily conceded a penalty corner. The visitors took their chance well with a powerful shot evading the Sevenoaks keeper and defenders. The visitors then gained confidence and started to take command of the game and eventually went two up.
Sevenoaks had chosen to play a 4-4-2 formation which, as the players tired, led to large gaps between the defence and lowly forwards. Keeper Downing was forced to make several key saves to keep Oaks from going further behind. To try to save the game, with 20 minutes remaining, skipper Jeffery changed the formation and added a third forward. This provided the tonic needed and Sevenoaks then started to drive forward with more confidence. The strong presence of Graham, spending most of the game defending against the University’s best player was suddenly allowed some freedom to attack. He made great use of this, threading a ball to Lambdon who coolly turned his marker to score the first comeback goal for Sevenoaks.
Sevenoaks continued to apply pressure but with no luck. The equalising goal came from extraordinary circumstances. Richardson spotted an opening from a 16 yard hit and quickly played a long ball to Lambdon who turned and drove into the opposition’s D. The keeper saved the initial shot but Lambdon played the rebound back towards the goal for Wood to have the simplest of tap ins. The game finished with the University feeling they had lost points and Oaks happy they had rescued a point.

Men’s 6th XI

New Becchamians 3 – 3 Sevenoaks

In Kent Division 6 Sevenoaks Men’s Sixth XI came back from the dead to draw 3-3 at New Becchamians. In the defensive line battling Jan Van der Velde, Marc Ng and Chris Hix came immediately under pressure. Soon Hix conceded a questionable short from which the hosts opened the scoring, and more slick play opened up Oaks for a second. Then racy winger Rob House was fouled and felled to limp off the field, reducing Oaks to 10 men. Things looked bad but the powerful midfield trio of Tim Gore, Andrew Reid and Jon Evans started to take command and perpetrate penetrating passes.
Reinforced at half-time by two victims of satnav, Oaks regrouped under the direction of canny keeper Mike Hrebien. But Becs added a third from an amazing individual run and Oaks had it all to do. Then Derry Wiltshire danced down the left wing and Reid rifled a first goal. A rumbustious run and cross by one-armed bandit Evans led to a powerful shot from storming James Side which ricocheted into the goal. But Oaks were caught on the break and Hix only just managed to get a stick in to deflect a shot wide. At the heart of the team the dynamic Neil Zabit and Piers Darkins drove Oaks forward. The ball was moving majestically now and following a fine team combination fiery forward Olly Rice fired home a third to give Oaks the well-deserved draw.

Ladies 3rd XI

Sevenoaks 7 - 0 Gravesend

Sevenoaks Ladies 3s started their post Christmas league campaign with a superb win on Saturday against Gravesend 2s. The first half saw plenty of attacks from Sevenoaks, although the speed of passing generally was very slow. As the game developed Sevenoaks grew in confidence and were rewarded with a goal when at a short corner Carolyn Kelly powered the ball into the back of the net, following an extremely neat one two with Mary Smith. So Oaks started the second half in the lead but only just, however the whole team stepped up a gear and linked up well across all areas of the pitch. The speed of passing improved no end and Carolyn Kelly quickly added to her tally with a fantastic first time shot from the top of the circle following great work down the right hand side from winger Georgina Light. Soon after this Kelly completed her hat trick following another great team move which saw the ball swiftly moved from defence through midfield into attack. Georgina Light then scored a very well deserved goal sweeping the ball firmly into the net and was very unlucky not to score again shortly after with a fine strike from the edge of the circle, but the Gravesend keeper made an amazing save to deny Oaks on this occasion. Sevenoaks kept up the pressure though and scored again when Maggie Morley swept the ball into the net following a well placed cross from Jacqui Hudson. Soon after this another ball passed from the back line by Jacqui Hudson was initially leapt on once again by Maggie Morley and although her shot was saved Julie Nicolson followed up and ensured the ball went over the goal line. Sevenoaks kept attacking right until the end and their seventh goal was firmly placed in the goal by Centre Forward Nicky Smith to complete a fine team performance from Sevenoaks 3s.

Ladies 4th XI

Ashford 5 -1 Sevenoaks

Sevenoaks ladies 4s arrived for their first post Christmas league game for a 10.15 start in Ashford. The game started at pace with both sides handed opportunities in front of goal. Oaks conceded the first goal against the run of play, but did not panic, and continued to press Ashford. Chances went begging for Genth and Abbott in goal line scrambles, as Oaks pushed forward, before Ashford scored two more before half time. Oaks, with some new faces in the side, Hubble and Hall, had a positive team talk at half time from injured captain Fowle and went out with vigour in the second half. After some early pressure, Tucker struck well from a penalty corner to get Oaks back in the game at 3-1. However, it was not their day and they were soon 4-1 down despite some strong performances throughout the side. Oaks couldn’t make their possession count, and finished the game 5-1 down having lost to a disciplined Ashford side. Whilst Oaks did not feel the scoreline reflected the game, they were not the better team on this occasion. Newcomer Emma Hubble deservedly took the man of the match accolade following a strong debut in the side, and is definitely one to watch for the future. Oaks look on to next week’s away game at Canterbury hoping to return to winning ways quickly.

Gloucester

Gloucester City got back on track after last weekends' shock defeat at home to Taunton Vale with a comfortable 3-0 victory away at Swansea Bay. City controlled the game and should have extended their already impressive league goal difference but failed to seize upon numerous opportunities when in the home sides circle. Tom Ward alongside Richard Watts marshalled early Swansea attacks and Andy Beer who was re-instated to the heart of the City midfield looked in good form, seeking early ball to the attack at every opportunity. Chris Harrington steadied the nerves on the twenty minute mark with a neat finish from an acute angle after drifting past two Swansea defenders close to the touchline.

Gloucester continued to press in the second period and were duly rewarded with two well taken goals from Andrew Tyrrell. The first an opportunist finish after good work down the left from Rob Davies and Iain Pritchard and the second a training ground routine deflection from Craig Ellis' free hit. With table toppers Cardiff & UWIC winning against rock bottom of the table Marlborough, City find themselves four points adrift with eight games remaining and with all to play for.

Gloucester City Badgers 0 Cheltenham Badgers 0

This goalless local derby belies the fact that there was some excellent hockey played by both teams. Gloucester were well on top in the first half, only being denied by the visitors experienced senior players in the last line of defence. The Cheltenham goalkeeper made some excellent saves whilst James White in the home goal was rarely troubled. The greater number of chances went to Gloucester, who really should have won this game. Penalty corner practice required.

Sevenoaks

Often lower sides match reports don't feature in the media so we thought we would start off this weeks report with the lower sides at Sevenoaks.

The Men's 6th XI didn't pack the shooting boots for their away trip to Welcome Unicorns but the opposition didn't have theirs either. In this Kent Division 6 clash both played out a tense goalless draw. Oaks seemed to overcome their grass phobia, with skillful forward play by the ever-dangerous pedagogic trio of Derry Wiltshire, Andrew Reid and Jon Evans. Neil Zabit effectively patrolled the midfield beat once he made it to the pitch, and Tim Gore and Rob House showed grit and determination to win the ball. Welcome's wily veterans posed some threat in attack, but the doughty and dogged back line of Chris Hix, Tony Barber and Piers Darkin kept control. Cool Captain Jan van der Velde reiterated at half-time that it was still anyone's game. Reid's mazy running baffled the opposition, and Mike Hrebien was imperious in goal, as Welcome tried to get shots away. Penetrating through passes from Zabit opened up the opposition, and Oaks kept threatening. Bumptious Barber was just wide from one of many shorts and Oaks looked more likely to score near the end as the opposition flagged, but in the end no-one could break the stalemate.

The clubs Junior U18 Indoor Side were taking part in the Qualifying Tournament for the South Championship to be held on Sunday 2nd December.

The first 5 games went as follows.

Sevenoaks 4 Eltham 0
Sevenoaks 3 Cranbrook 0
Sevenoaks 1 Magdalene 0
Sevenoaks 0 Eastbourne 0
Sevenoaks 0 Desborough 0
Sevenoaks 1 Portsmouth 1

All this meant Sevenoaks went through as runners up on points and are now looking forward with some considerable anticipation and hope to the South Championship on the 2nd December

The Men’s 3rd XI confidently set fire to the Burnt Ash 2nd XI and won 4 - 0 and the Men’s 4th XI smoldered to a 4 - 2 victory against the same opposition.

The Ladies 2s hosted St Albans 2s in their East Division 1 game at Hollybush. Sevenoaks were forced to field a varied line up due to injury and absence. Early on, this showed as Oaks were unable to find their rhythm and patterns of play. Keeper Gill Thompson made a series of outstanding saves as Oaks defensive organisation was found wanting. Oaks rode the period of pressure and when promoted third team player Georgina Light came into the game, she provided a target for the mid field to clear to. When Ruth Bingham switched to the left, Oaks stretched the St Albans defence and started to find space into which to work and create pressure. Oaks grew in confidence and 10 minutes into the 2nd half Bingham touched the ball into the goal. On 20 minutes Begg smashed the ball into the roof of the net to make it two. St Albans stretched the play for a frantic last ten minutes. They found the back of the net once but Oaks held their form and nerve for their 6th win of the season

The Ladies 3's continued their unbeaten run with a confident 5 - 0 win against BBHC. Carolyn Kelly scored two and the others were provided by Lottie Willis, Hollie Luke and Maggie Morley.

Thirsk

The Men's second team provided a quality performance on Saturday against Leeds 5th team at the Thirsk home pitch. Again a mixture of 'mature' players and talented youth were on show and first goal came around 10 minutes from a short corner well struck by Ian Foxley. Continued dominance of mid field and a solid defence provided the drive forward down the right and after some quick passing around the D led to a well taken goal by David Ramsden. Half time 2-0 and after some encouraging words at the break by captain Andrew Young Thirsk came out and carried on from where they had finished the first half. Any attacks by Leeds were quickly controlled and several chances were missed by Thirsk before a goal from veteran right wing Simon Gaskell pushed the score to 3-0. Further attacks followed and from a free hit, Ian Foxley found David Ramsden at the back post to slot in a forth. Philip Young kept well and finished with a clean sheet for the first time this season.

Thirsk Ladies II’s entertained Leeds Adel Carnegie 4 this weekend and put up a good fight. LA Carnegie went ahead half way through the first half. The second half saw some good attacking play from Thirsk creating chances to score but despite excellent play from Lizzie Walters and Charlotte Frank the ball just would not go into the net. In contrast LA Carnegie scored another 2 goals but Thirsk were rewarded with a goal from a short corner with a solid strike from Karen Skippings, to finish the match on a win for LA Carnegie of 3 – 1. Player of the Match was Karen Skippings.

Harleston Magpies

Harleston Men continued their period at the top of NE14HOCKEY East Premier League following a convincing win 3-0 against Havering. Whilst the score line may not suggest complete dominance the Magpies goalie had but one shot to save, Havering defended well in the second half to prevent Magpies extending their half-time lead. St Albans continued their pursuit of Magpies with a narrow victory against equal bottom of the table Wapping. This week it is Magpies turn to play a bottom of the table side with a visit to Harpenden. St Albans have a tough fixture against Broxbourne. However it would be a surprise if the table did not have the same look at the top following these games. Robert Stimpson commented following the Havering game "this was a confident display against a side who did not stop trying to disrupt our pattern.

Atherstone Adders

Two perfectly executed short corner goals either side of half time, by Martin Webb secured the points for the Adders and made it 8 from 8 this season in the BodyKraft League. However the side was made to work hard for their victory by a Kynoch side who defended well, but rarely threatened the Adders solid defence. With their nearest league rivals playing each other this was a chance for the Adders to extend the gap at the top of the table and they responded with a hard fought performance. The side stuttered and gasped it's way to victory and, despite totally dominating the match, the victory never looked convincing.

Adders Ladies 1sts also continued their unbeaten run with a much more comfortable looking but equally nervous 4 - 0 win against Wasps. The last minute drop out by Captain Carter saw a line up against WASPS which will become familiar for the rest of the Ladies season, when Laura Webb and Steph Carter go down under on their travels. This week saw the colourful return of under performing fantasy league player Steph Wright and the Ladies regular umpire Mick Wright. The Ladies were hopeful of replicating last weeks positive performance and exterminating the WASPS. They came home 4 - 0 victors to stay top of the League, but not in the emphatic manner they had hoped.

March Town

March Town had mixed results again in the NE14HOCKEY EAST MENS LEAGUES. In Div 2 North the first lost away 5 - 2 to Sudbury 1st's after a good start that saw them leading at halftime 2 - 1. The first half strikes came from Matt Wallis and Daniel Shirley. The second half saw March playing well, but Sudbury had the bit between their teeth, and gradually forced their way back into the game, scoring four further goals. In 3 North West the 2nd's also suffered a second half set back. This time it was 2 - 2 at half time and then Rutland slammed in 6 without reply in the second half to take all 3 points.

The Men's 3rd's showed no such lapse in Division 5 North West building on a 2 - 2 half time score line to take the game from Alford 2nd's 3 - 2. The finishing touches were provided by Gary Howsam (2) and Adam Triggs. The 4th team added to the clubs woes by failing to win a game that was there for the taking and losing by an annoying 1 - 0 score line to Ely. A young 5th team showed the rest of the Men's teams how it should be done by knocking 8 past a mature Cambs South 4th XI. Simon Laws scored in the first 5 minutes and then completed a well deserved hat trick. The other goals were provided by Ross Ambler (2), David Hodson (2), and David Haslegrave. Cambs South contributed a goal in each half to make it an exciting 10 goal game.

The Ladies sides failed to alter the mood both suffering defeats. The 1st XI were well in the game to half time and only trailed 3 - 2 but The University of East Anglia 1sts powered on to win 6 - 2. In the Cambs Ladies Premier League the second team failed to score and were dispatched by Cambs University 3rds 4 - 0.

Dart

Dart were held to a 3 - 3 by Sidmouth at a ground were they have failed to perform well for a few seasons. Dart started well and controlled the game, moving forward with purpose and defending with ease. Five minutes from half time Dart gained a short corner, and Ben Gaywood managed to slip the ball under the keeper to give Dart the lead. Two players for Dart were substituted at half time to give them a rest and this seemed to knock the simple confidence gained in the first half. Sloppy defending gave Sidmouth first an equaliser and then the lead. Dart then threw back on their two influential midfielders of Ben Gaywood and Jason Wakefield, and this levelled the score in a couple of minutes. Five minutes later they were back in the lead in this Topsy turvy match. Sidmouth threw everyone forward for the last few minutes , they gained a free hit just outside the D and in the ensuing melee managed to slip the ball past the Dart keeper to take the final score to three.

City of Peterborough

In the NE14HOCKEY East Premier B CoP 2nd's won well, beating Chelmsford 2nd's 5 - 1. City started slowly against a skilful and fast moving opposition forward line, and against the run of play, City took the lead through a Jo Kopka. A second was added by Brendan Sullivan before half time. Chelmsford started the second half stronger with numerous penalty corners conceded, but City defence held strong as well as a couple of fine saves from Jon Short in goal. City eased the pressure with goals from Sullivan, Andrew Cave and a rare goal from Stuart Dawson. City's 3rd's were also on target winning 4 - 0 against Cambridge City 4th's Shayne Andrews got a hat trick and Tim Pollard provided the other.

In Div 4 North West the 5th XI lost by a single goal to Boston 1st XI. In a very physical game City felt aggrieved at certain umpiring decisions including a yellow card for Joe Paul. In Div 5NW Bourne 3’s were the best side City 6th XI have played this season, full of good experienced adult players. City were happy to walk away with a point from the 3 - 3 draw which kept them just above Bourne in the table.

In the East Veterans League City Vets travelled with only 10 players and came up with a master plan to only play 3 at the back. This worked well for the first half which ended with a 1 – 0 lead through Ian Kennedy. For 10 more minutes City held out but Chelmsford with a youngish centre forward who could run, suddenly found the key and score 3 very quick goals. City then replied through a deflected strike from Mick Ward (scoring for the 45th consecutive season for the club) and thought they were still in with a chance. However, this was soon proved to be a false dawn as Chelmsford exploited City’s lack of numbers as their defence tired and finished comfortable winners 6 - 2.

Gloucester City

Top met bottom in the N4 WOESW Premier division in an uncontested encounter at Oxstalls. Gloucester ran out comfortable 9 - 0 winners against an under strength Marlborough side, to record their seventh league win of the season and sustain their good run of form. Matt Fairburn and Iain Pritchard both got 3 a piece and Chris Harrington, Kris Green, and Tom Ward scored 1 each in the second half.

Gloucester City B were also in good finishing form beating Newport 5 - 3. Newport took hold of the game from the start putting Gloucester on the back foot and scoring two early goals. Gloucester undeterred by this regrouped and Richard Allott scored in the dying minutes of the first half to give the home team a much needed goal. In the second half Graeme Pratt scored closely followed by another by Mark Charania to put City in the lead. Newport however managed to equalise on the break, once again bringing the scores level. This only seemed to fuel the Gloucester machine and some good play from the back saw Pratt score again. Another goal from Allott extended Gloucester's lead towards the end bringing the final score 5-3 to the home side.

Gloucester City Ladies went into Saturdays game with some key players missing, hoping to gain some points from top of the league Team Bath Buccs. City starting strongly dominating the first half with Emma Done and Laura Gummer but no goals came. In the second half Gloucester started strong and after many failed short corners saw Bath score on the break leaving the score 1-0. City continued to fight hard and were unable to score against a strong bath keeper. Gloucester battled and were on the day the better side but they were caught on the back foot again and Bath scored again to make it 2 - 0. The Ladies 4th's team faired better against East Glos Ladies 2nd's to run out 3 -1 winners. St. Edwards School was the setting for the most impressive display of the season for Gloucester City team. It gave the team another opportunity to display there ever improving skills and abilities and scintillating team play, showing the East Glos Team how hockey should be played.

Around and about some of our registered clubs

First in the East, Harleston Magpies continued their excellent run with a 5-2 demolition of lowly Bishop Stortford and they stay at the top of the NE14HOCKEY East Men's Premier Division. The visitors defended well for the early part of the game but Andy Hipwell’s finishing was in a class of its own with four goals, the first from a corner and the remainder from open play. Captain Leigh Sitch unavailable through a coaching commitment was replaced by Tristan Baynes. This was the latter’s first league game of the season following a finger injury sustained in a pre-season friendly.

Welsh wizards Whitchurch Men's 1st had another long trip and another disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Indian Gymkhana in the Slazenger EHL. Whitchurch started well in a fast flowing game that produced goal scoring chances for both sides. The Whitchurch defence held firm against the dangerous Gymkhana forwards and skipper Iwan Williams produced some fine saves to keep them out. Whitchurch created two great chances which they could not convert.

Gymkhana opened the second period strongly but then ten minutes into the half Whitchurch took the lead, Joe Naughalty scoring from a well-worked penalty corner routine. Whitchurch worked hard to protect their hard-won lead but with seven minutes to go Gymkhana's pressure told as they converted a penalty corner to equalise and then scored the winner from open play with just two minutes left. Whitchurch sit in ninth place in the National South Division.

Over in Warwickshire Atherstone Adders go from strength to strength. They stormed to another good win away at Chaddesley Corbett with Martin Webb scoring 4 in their 6-0 performance. Richard Stubbs and Danny Brooks were the other scorers. Webb is on fire at the moment and has shot his way to the top of the League top scorers with a personal tally of 14, This includes three hat-tricks in only four games! Next week the Adders go head to head with joint table toppers, Market Drayton. Something will have to give as both of the sides are only separated by goal difference.

Adders Ladies managed a glorious 8-0 win over Berkswell Ladies. The goals came from throughout the team with Caroline Tiernan 2, Sam Kerr 2, Ali O'Callaghan (2), Lizzie Mill, Steph Carter sharing the spoils. This week’s match saw Atherstone Ladies consolidate their position at the top of division 3.

Down in the South West one of our former clubs of the week Dart HC lost their first game of the season to Exeter University D 3-2. The game started at breakneck speed with both teams onto the ball quickly and tackling hard into the fifty fifty balls. The university side had a full compliment of subs and they continually rolled them on to keep the pressure up . Dart kept pushing forward at speed and it earned them a free hit just outside the D for a clumsy challenge. The ball was played in hard and deflected by Richard Milton into the path of Howard Kahn who slipped the ball into the net with aplomb.

Exeter equalised five minutes later when the ball was slipped right at a short corner and was hit with force into the bottom right of the net. Dart were again on target five minutes later when they broke quickly and Woodhouse finished sweetly. Dart got to half time with a deserved 2--1 lead.

After the break the game continued and fifteen minutes in came the defining moment of the game. Milton one on one with the keeper had an open goal but the keeper looked to throw his glove and stick at the attacker trying to put him off and causing him to miss . Surely a penalty flick would ensue and the keeper sent off ? But no , after a Lengthy discussion by the university umpires it was deemed that the goalkeepers actions were accidental and a short corner was awarded. Although this action did not change the score at the time it brought doubts into the Dart minds and they started to retreat. Exeter pushed forward and started to get short corners. With five minutes to go they equalised from one of these and this gave them even more belief. With two minutes to go the inevitable happened and Exeter won the game from a quick break.
Dart have been selected as club of the week for their comprehensive match reports and new registration.

Dart Men’s First team once again hit the bullseye on saturday as they thrashed lowly Taunton Civil Service A 9 v 0 in a South East Division One encounter to leave them top of the table by three points.

Dart made a bright start which saw them 3 v 0 up within the first 15 minutes. The first goal came after just 90 seconds when Jason Wakefield did well to keep the ball in play, he played it back to Richard Milton who had a tap in past the helpless Taunton keeper. The second soon followed when Milton played a through ball to Wakefield who scored with a trademark reverse stick sweep in off the under side of the crossbar. Milton was then on hand again to score his second of the day with a reverse stick shot through the legs of the keeper.

Taunton changed formation in the hope that they could get something out of this game. The change loaded the midfield and they had a little more possession and began to cause a threat but the Dart defence held firm. Then Dart made it four just before half time when Wakefield grabbed his second of the day with a slap into the bottom left hand corner.

In previous weeks, Dart have taken their foot off the gas when in this position but not this week. After an early Taunton chance which Keeper Rossiter dealt with, Dart turned on the pressure and ground down their opponents. Ben Gaywood set up Dart’s fifth with a hit across the D in which Woodhouse deflected it goal-bound. The Taunton heads started to drop leaving gaps all over the park for the Dart midfield to exploit. The ball was played through into the D and a penalty corner was awarded for an infringement. Walton stepped up to make it six with a low, sweetly driven, shot into the bottom left hand corner.

With Taunton pinned into their own half, unable to retrieve the ball, it was inevitable that there were more goals in this game. The seventh came when there was a good passage of play down the left wing, the ball was played into the centre of the D and Milton completed his hat-trick. After a rare attack by the Somerset side, the ball broke loose. The Dart midfield duo of Smith and Gaywood took the Taunton midfield apart with some slick one touch passing, the ball was spread out wide to Quartley who took it into the D and pulled it back to Smith who continued his run from midfield for him to slot it past the keeper to make it 8 v 0. The final goal of the game was a scrappy affair with the ball pinging around the D, but Milton had the composure to hit a reverse stick shot just inside the left hand post to make it four for him and nine for Dart.

The Men's seconds managed a 2-2 draw in their game against Exe A. The opening encounters of this were tight and nervous but the quality of the hockey belied both teams lowly positions in the league. Exe fielded a young side with a smattering of experience while Dart had arrived with an experienced side and a smattering of youngsters. Both systems countered each other out for most of the first half. The Dart defence of Richard Blair , Sam Tallowin, James Shepard and Vic Rose had more and more work to do as the half went on as Exe found their attacking feet , but it was the Dart keeper Jocelyn Farr who proved his worth with a number of fine saves towards the end of the half to keep Dart in the game.

The second half in contrast was a completely different game. Almost immediately after the whistle Dart attacked down the middle and the ball was eventually rolled into the net by Connie Clark. This shocked Exe into a higher work rate and they kept battering at the Dart defence until , ten minutes later , the ball just rolled over the line at a short corner to bring the scores level. Five minutes after that again at a short corner Exe took the lead.

Dart were deflated but continued to work hard and with three minutes to go pushed a lot of men forward. A cross saved by the keeper dropped to Ian Hale who managesd to get it out from under his fett in time to slip it past the keeper and level the score. Special mention must go to Frank Verway who worked his socks off continually throughout the game.

The Ladies 1sts lost away to Plymouth University. This result was a huge disappointment for Dart Ladies after their impressive 9 –0 win over Bude the previous week. Fielding exactly the same team consisting of youth and experience Dart dominated from the start but once again excellent goal keeping from the opposition frustrated the Dart forwards. Numerous short corners were awarded, shots were taken but Dart weren’t following up the rebounds so chances were wasted.

At the start of the second half the University side came back into the game and within 10 minutes, totally against the run of play, had broken through Dart’s defense. With Keeper Amy Jones stranded on the left after making a fine save the ball was quickly slipped around her from the rebound and put in the back of the net. A stunned Dart side were spurred into action, Jaz Brook played exceptionally well at right back with her supporting play and great interceptions whilst sister Heather made some superb runs into the D setting up numerous goal scoring opportunities. The finishing touches weren’t there though and the goal drought continued. Adele Hart almost pulled the score level in the last minute when her strike on goal skimmed the wrong side of the post with the narrowest of margins.

The 2nds managed an excellent 2-0 result at home to Exe 5ths. This was a match which Dart dominated from start to finish. The home team began the match brightly with plenty of effort, although passing could have been more accurate. There was plenty of pressure on the Exe goal and only a string of great saves by the visiting goalkeeper throughout the match kept the score to just 2-0. After half-time Dart began to pass with greater confidence and pushed Exe further into their own twenty five, defender Lynn Fouracre scoring with a cracking shot. Lucy Nicholls and Roisin Skilton regularly beat the defence for pace and it was from a Nicholls cross that Alice Wakeham swept the ball into the net. The experienced Dart defence were always in control and the home side were deserved winners.
