If your team nets a hat full of goals tell us because you could become 1 of our high score champions of 2008/ 2009 This competition was for bragging rights and a trophy for each zone.

 Harleston Magpies

Harleston Magpies Men's first team extended their lead at the top of the NE1HOCKEY East Men's League Premier A with a win against Wapping whilst nearest rivals St Albans could only draw against Bedford. No doubt both the top sides were finding it difficult to adapt back to the outdoor game following the mid winter break when the indoor game had taken centre stage. With Neil Toulson unavailable and two under eighteen players rested pending their involvement in the under eighteen indoor national finals this weekend Magpies took the opportunity to recall Stuart Leate and give a first game of the season to Jamie Stacey. Robert Stimpson commented "We were pleased that the fixture computer gave us a game against one of the lower sides in the division for our first game back after the break. The success of our boys in the indoor has thrown up selection problems for this weekend but it has given us an opportunity to give much needed pitch time to other members of our squad .Whilst we are focused on one game at a time we have to improve the performance levels of our complete squad in the event that we win the league and go forward to play offs."

City of Peterborough

In the NE14HOCKEY Premier B Division the 2nd XI beat St Neots 1sts in an exciting 10 goal game, 7 – 3 Scott Beech bagged himself a hat trick with thw others being added by Tom Hagues, Tom Batey, Craig Petrie and Joe Bradley. With League leaders Wisbech only drawing at Pelicans, this consolidated City position in second place. Scot Beech’s debut for the club was marked by a hat trick of drag flick conversions from short corners that could perhaps also prove invaluable for City’s 1st XI. 2 – 0 up at half time City were always in control against a determined St Neots side although the performance was marred by the concession of two goals due to poor defending that brought the score back to 5 – 3 at one stage before City finished strongly.

In Div 2N CoP 3rds were shut out by St Ives 1sts losing 5 - 0. This first V third clash was emphatically settled in favour of the league leaders. Going 2 – 0 down early on City never really recovered and were punished expertly by St Ives when they continued to chase the game and over committed players forward towards the end.

A better fate awaited the 4ths at Cambs Nomads where they pulled off a 3 – 0 win with goals from Stuart Bond, Gaz Mohammed and Wayne Humphreys. City were always in control in this game with Martin Hill earning a man of the match tag for a fine typically energetic display in midfield. Stuart Bond continued his recent goal scoring streak, Gaz Mohammed also notched with Wayne Humphreys also “doing what he is good at”.

The 5th XI narrowly lost 1 - 0 to St Ives 2nds. In a strangely lack lustre game with few opportunities for either side, City were edged out by an efficient and hard working St Ives team.

In Division 5NW the 6th team hammered bottom of the table Cambs Nomads 8 – 0 Goals came from all over the park through Tom Wadsworth (2), Tom Clarkson (2), Marcus Howard (2), Keith Huggins and Graham Mitchell. City now reclaim a possible promotion spot in second place in the league

In the East Veterans League City lost 3 - 0. City with a few their more regular, gifted and younger players missing were expecting a “going over” from clear league leaders Ipswich and got it. They came away not unsatisfied with the scoreline against a much younger and talented side thanks to a two or 3 goal line clearances great displays form Dave Hiles in goal and, of course, John Dakin at sweeper.

On Sunday the 1st XI played in a triangular competition. They won the first game against Sikh Union of Nottingham 7 -1 with goals from Tom Batey (3), Brendan Sullivan (2), Greg Hopkinson and Kalbir Takhar. In the second match they drew with Cambridge University 3 - 3, this time with Scott Beech (pf), Simon Shorter and Greg Hopkinson on target. In an extremely worthwhile exercise, City acquitted themselves very well in two hard matches. 5 players short of their full strength squad, there were opportunities to blood some fringe players and Tom Hagues showed great promise although asked to play out of position. Against a similarly below strength Sikh Union, City started strongly and some fat flowing hockey resulted in Tom Batey being on the end of most things to notch a first half hat trick in a 5 – 1 half time score line. With Scott Gilmour prominent, City continued to have the better of things although keeper Andy Grimwood produced some excellent saves as Sikh Union improved in the second half and City rang the changes.

The second match against a full strength, young fit and well drilled Cambridge University side was a different matter. On the back foot for most of the first half as they struggled to gain any sustained possession and found themselves 1 – 2 down by half time despite a debut goal from a penalty stroke expertly converted by Scott Beech (ex Doncaster). However 2 quick goals in 2 minutes from Greg Hopkinson and a tremendous finish from Simon Shorter after a great run and cross from Scott Gilmour put City ahead. However a loss of possession in a vital area was clinically punished by the University forwards to produce a fair result on the balance of play.

March

March Ladies firsts made it two wins from two starts in the second half of their League Season, with a hard fought win over Louth 1st XI on Saturday. The home side, sponsored by Brandon Bolt Company, had most of the possession early on, and an early goal came from a penalty corner, well struck by Katie Rodger and deflected past the keeper by midfielder Shereen Hutton. Louth picked up their game, making for a fast, evenly balanced encounter. Excellent defending from Verity Allen, Gemma Parr and keeper Julie Ingham, ensured March kept a clean sheet during the half.

March began the second half with a very attacking formation, which paid off with an early goal. The ball was moved from midfield to Shereen Hutton on the edge of the circle and she quickly found Lauren Oakman who swept the ball past the keeper. The rest of the half was evenly matched with both keepers making some excellent saves, and some very good work in midfield from Katie Rodger, Liz Robinson and Anna Whittome. This was an excellent team performance from March, with Verity Allen and Julie Ingham being voted Joint Players of the Match.

Unfortunately the 2nds could not mach this performance and not for the first time against Newmarket, March had a good performance ruined by poor umpiring. For the first 15 minutes, the visitors, sponsored by Mondi Packaging UK Ltd, courageously held out, thwarting the Newmarket forwards with a display of great defending from the back four. Early March attacks were rewarded with a penalty corner for a foul on Jenny Palmer. Petrina Cartwright struck a fine shot which was kicked by a defender into the path of Jenny Palmer. As the players froze, half anticipating the whistle, Jenny Palmer slotted the ball past the keeper and into the net. As March celebrated and lined up for the re-start, the home umpire suddenly disallowed the goal and awarded March another penalty corner. This visibly unsettled March and their early focus was lost, allowing Newmarket back into the game, with the hosts scoring three times before the interval.

Some great keeping by stand in keeper Tracy Palmer in the second half ensured the score remained the same until well into the half. More contentious decisions and a yellow card for Petrina Cartwright unsettled March and Newmarket added two further goals. In the final 10 minutes, with March threatened with further bookings, the home side made the game safe with three further goals, for a somewhat flattering victory. The only consolation for March was that the home side offered their apologies for the inconsistent umpiring.

March Men's 1st travelled to Cambridge City for their first game since the 8th December 2007, looking to avenge an earlier 0-3 defeat. In the event, the two sides took part in a game that was far closer than the scoreline suggests. The visitors, sponsored by Bar 23, kept pace with the Cambridge side in an even first half, the only difference being that Cambridge City took two well constructed chances to open up a two goal lead, whereas March were guilty of not taking their chances.

The half time team talk revolved around staying positive, and playing open hockey in the hope that the rewards would be forthcoming in the second half. Despite a bright start by March, two defensive lapses allowed Cambridge City to double their score. March saved their best hockey for the last quarter of the game, and were justifiably rewarded when Player of the Match Josh Birt converted a close range goal. The final result of 4 - 1 flatered the home side.

With March 2nds and Long Sutton both anchored at the foot of Division 3 North West, this was a must win game for March if they were to stand any chance of avoiding relegation. The home side, sponsored by Knights End Training, made a good start, playing strong attacking hockey against a side without a win or a point so far this Season. For long spells, March camped in the Long Sutton half, with Matt Wallis going close to scoring on at least two occasions. The deadlock was eventually broken by a Charlie Kisby free hit that found captain Charlie Saunders on the top of the circle. A deft lay off from the captain saw Matt Wallis fire the ball past the Long Sutton keeper to give March the lead. The flood gates should have opened but March found themselves unable to capitalise on other chances, including a number of penalty corner attempts.

The second half saw the visitors coming back into the game, and with only a solitary goal lead, March were anxious, and it was reflected in their play. Long Sutton equalised mid way through the half from a breakaway, and March had to draw on all their strength to try and grind out a result. There were a few good moves involving Ryan Wright and Tom Cole, with Cole twice going close in the last 15 minutes. With full time signalled, March were awarded a penalty corner. Ashley Welland’s shot rebounded off the keeper and Charlie Saunders gratefully smashed the ball back past the keeper and into the net, for a last ditch win and three valuable points.

Sponsored by ROI Distribution, March 3rds have made an excellent start to the second half of their League Season, with a comprehensive victory over Newmarket, which ensures them fourth place in Division 5 North West. Manager Sid Dickinson was full of praise for an excellent team performance, with special mention going to the younger players in the squad. March took an early lead through top scorer Charlie Boughton, and despite Newmarket coming back well into the game, March remained in control for the rest of the half, and increased their lead before half time again through Charlie Boughton.

The second half saw March giving maximum effort and it was no surprise when Charlie Boughton scored his hat trick goal to put March 3-0 ahead. A typical Gary Howsam strike from a penalty corner virtually sealed victory before Jacob Fraser put the icing on the cake with March’s fifth goal. Newmarket were not to be outdone, and shortly before the end, scored a deserved consolation goal, but it was March’s day without doubt with an excellent all round display of attacking hockey.

March Town 4ths had to move their game from a Wisbech Astro that was waterlogged, to Long Sutton, where conditions were quite playable. Without a game since the 1st December 2007, March began well, but fell behind to two goals early on, leaving them with a mountain to climb. It didn’t take long for the visitors to make an impact, as Stuart Fox flicked a delightful goal over the keeper’s head, to put March back in with a shout. Wisbech worked hard to restore their two goal advantage and were rewarded with another good goal. March fought back well, and only good Wisbech defending, prevented the visitors from reducing the arrears again before half time.

The second half saw March come out strongly and Andrew Wright scored a good goal to make the score 2-3. There was a long period of excellent play from both sides, with Wisbech eventually going into a 4-2 lead, before Andrew Wright grabbed another for March. Wisbech confirmed their overall superiority with two further goals to run out 6-3 winners. Vice captain Luke Barton was full of praise for a superb team performance from the March side. Next week, March entertain Cambridge South 3rd XI – start 1pm.

The 5th team travelled with only 10 players for Saturday’s trip to Newmarket, March took the lead after just 5 minutes with a well taken goal from Jamie Sandford. In extremely wet, soggy conditions, both sides fashioned a number of penalty corners during an entertaining first half, but defences remained on top, with Newmarket eventually forcing an equaliser just before half time.

Jamie Sandford, Simon Laws and Matthew Lakey controlled the midfield for March, while up front, Ross Ambler, David Haslegrave and Nathan Foad put in good performances to make up for the missing player. 20 minutes into the second half, Newmarket scored their second goal, but the March side never gave up, and just 10 minutes later, scored a deserved equaliser through Ross Ambler.

Peterborough Exiles

Well a point is better than nothing but it should have been all three points and a chance to close the gap from the bottom of the table. Playing probably our best hockey of the season so far the team put on a good performance and deserved more. A new short corner routine provided both goals, the first from a direct shot and the second after a couple of saves from their keeper.
